Joe Williams Reflects On His Baseball Journey And Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 12, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 1, 2024

My Baseball Journey and Support of Doc Adams’ Election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by Joe Williams This post is long overdue. My friend, Roger Ratzenberger, has politely asked me on many occasions to write something for Doc Adams Base Ball in support of Doc Adams for the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I tried writing something over the summer, but I could not figure out what I could add to what has already been written for the site. Doc Adams Base Ball already covers everything about Doc’s life and baseball accomplishments in a wonderful way. I told … Continue reading →

Doc Adams, A True Pioneer By Author Andrew J. Schiff

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 8, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 1, 2024

There’s a plaque in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, for a reputed figure in early baseball history. His name is Alexander Cartwright. He is credited for making the bases 90 feet apart, establishing nine innings as a game, and nine players for a team. He is also credited with spreading baseball throughout the United States when he left New York on his way to Hawaii. These are wonderful contributions for the man credited as The Father of Baseball. However, even though he has a plaque in the Baseball HOF, he is not the person responsible for … Continue reading →

“Examine the Evidence”, Historian Brian Sheehy

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 7, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 1, 2024

As an educator and historian it is essential for us to consistently reexamine and reassess our interpretation of history and the impact and influence that people, events, and places have on that history. Thankfully MLB and the Baseball HOF have started this process with reexamining the Negro League and the statistics of those players. I am not going to rehash the many deeds that Doc Adams did to contribute to the game of baseball, as many of my fellow players and historians have already done but I think it is time for the baseball community to acknowledge and celebrate the … Continue reading →

Baseball Historian Graham Womack On Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 3, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 1, 2024

As a historian, I care about accuracy and preserving what really happened in baseball’s history. Enshrining Doc Adams in the Hall of Fame would be a great way to honor this. The creator of this website, Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr. does a nice job of summing up Adams’ accomplishments. I’ll offer them here for anyone who hasn’t read that post yet. Essentially, Adams, the president of New York City’s Knickerbocker Base Ball Club led a committee that codified various rules for the game, including that bases were to be 90 feet apart, games were to last nine innings and teams … Continue reading →

Peter Mancuso Comments On Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 11, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

Peter Mancuso, the Co-Chair of the Nineteenth Century Committee of the Society of American Baseball Research, recently commented on one of our posts. We wanted to take a moment to highlight his comments to all our followers. Each year, since 2009, SABR’s Nineteenth Century Committee has been behind the Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legends Project, under the excellent supervision of Project Co-Chairs, Adam Darowski and Joe Williams and their sub-committee members. First only Nineteenth Century Committee members, and now, all SABR members are eligible to vote for a 19th Century baseball person, not yet selected for induction in the National … Continue reading →

A Pitch For Doc Adams In Cooperstown

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 9, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 3, 2024

The Vintage Base Ball community is rallying behind long-overlooked baseball pioneer Doc Adams by sponsoring “A Pitch For Doc Adams” events to raise awareness of baseball pioneer, Doc Adams, and his Hall of Fame case. Clubs across the country are hosting mid-19th century style base ball games to raise awareness of the many contributions of Daniel Lucius Adams, MD (aka “Doc”) to our National Pastime during its nascent period. The events, dubbed “A Pitch for Doc Adams”, are one of several types planned throughout the year by vintage base ball teams across the U.S. Each event seeks to draw attention … Continue reading →

The 2024 Annual Doc Adams Old Time Base Ball Festival

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 6, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

The 2024 Annual Doc Adams Old Time Base Ball Festival was held last weekend (August 3-4) at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. In 2015, this longest running annual vintage base ball festival of its kind was renamed in honor of Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams. This year’s festival once again lived up its reputation as a must see for baseball fans, history buffs, and anyone looking for a day of outdoor fun. It was hot, hot, hot and the ballists and cranks did their best to keep cool and stay hydrated. But even the heat couldn’t put a damper on the event … Continue reading →

Jay Jaffe (Fan Graphs) Expresses Support

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 5, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

Jay Jaffe of Fan Graphs has expressed his support several times for the induction of Doc Adams into the National Hall of Fame. He made a good point back in January 2020. Here’s some thoughts from Jay Jaffe in Sports Illustrated back in December 2015: Doc Adams, pioneer Roll over, Abner Doubleday, and tell Alexander Cartwright the news. No less an authority than MLB official historian John Thorn called Daniel Lucius Adams “first among the Fathers of Baseball” in a 1993 essay for Total Baseball and “the most significant figure in the early history of baseball” in his 2011 book … Continue reading →
