The 27th installment of the Annual Doc Adams Old Time Base Ball Festival will take place tomorrow and Sunday, August 3-4, at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. In 2015, this longest running annual vintage base ball festival of its kind was renamed in honor of Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams. The festival is a must for baseball fans, history buffs, and anyone looking for a a day of outdoor fun. This year, The Kickerbocker Experience will be making its 3rd appearance at the festival. The Old Time Base Ball Festival held at Old Bethpage Village Restoration is the longest running Vintage Base Ball Festival of its kind having its inaugural event in 1997. Teams from across the country come to play various different versions of old-time base ball from the 1850s to 1890s. Starting in 1979 as a Civil War reenactment, it evolved into a recreation of the 1864 base ball league made up of teams that existed on the island back in that time period. As a historian, I care about accuracy and preserving what really happened in baseball’s history. Enshrining Doc Adams in the Hall of Fame would be a great way to honor this. The creator of this website, Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr. does a nice job of summing up Adams’ accomplishments. I’ll offer them here for anyone who hasn’t read that post yet. There’s a plaque in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, for a reputed figure in early baseball history. His name is Alexander Cartwright. He is credited for making the bases 90 feet apart, establishing nine innings as a game, and nine players for a team.
