It was even more special with Doc’s great-granddaughters, Marjorie Adams and Nancy Downey, in attendance. The latest installment of the Doc Adams Birthplace Classic took place Saturday, September 25 in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. Due to recent wet weather, the games were moved from Lamson Farm to nearby McCollom Field. However, Saturday was a top 10 weather day and even with the change in venue, it was another outstanding event! The Dirigo Base Ball Club of Maine and a picked nine from several northeast vintage clubs entertained the cranks in attendance with their skills and love of the game. On September 27, 1875, the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club held a reunion base ball game between the 1855 and 1865 teams. At the invitation of his former Knickerbocker teammate, James Whyte Davis, Doc Adams returned to Hoboken for the game to celebrate Davis’ twenty-fifth year with the club. The Youngsters of 1865 whitewashed the veterans by a score of 21-0. Doc was the catcher for the Veterans of 1857. The oldest existing game ball from a scheduled baseball match is on display in Cooperstown. It is from the game between the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club and the Gothams played on September 20, 1854. Doc Adams played in that game, batting 4th, had 6 Hands Lost and 1 Run scored. The Knickerbockers defeated the Gothams 24-13.

Continue reading →Per yesterday’s post the Fashion Race Course games ok were played between All-Star teams (pick nines) comprised of the finest New York-area players versus the finest Brooklyn area players and was the 1st real All-Star Series. It was also the 1st time admission was charged to watch a game. The 3rd and deciding game, was played on September 10, 1858. The umpire for this important game was none other than Doc Adams of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club. An article on the game appeared in the New York Times 163 years ago today.
