Remembering Marjorie Adams On Her Birthday

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on December 7, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 16, 2023

Today would have been Marjorie Adams’ 73rd birthday. Marjorie’s tireless efforts to spread the story of her great-grandfather, Doc Adams, enlightened and inspired many baseball fans. Marjorie conducted a campaign to educate people on Doc’s role as a pioneer of our National Pastime and his importance to baseball’s survival and growth during its nascent period. Her goal was to see him recognized with long overdue enshrinement in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. She made many ‘baseball’ friends, particularly in the vintage base ball community. She is greatly missed. When talking about Doc, Marjorie often said that “she has all … Continue reading →

Talk About Big Shoes To Fill

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on November 30, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.December 10, 2021

It’s always a challenge for children to live up to their celebrity relatives. This article in the “Argus and Patriot” (Montpelier, VT) dated August 28, 1895 illustrates that this is not a new phenomenon. The article is a recount of a game between National Life Insurance Company and the Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company. The game was played on Seminary Hill in Montpelier, Vermont on a rather inclement day. The final score was 14-7 in favor of the “fire boys”. The game account is written in the ‘flowery style” of the day and interesting for that alone. However, about halfway into … Continue reading →

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on November 7, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.December 12, 2021

‘Baseball’s Book of Firsts‘ by Lloyd Johnson is a “A comprehensive guide to the record-setting achievements of baseball’s greatest players”. Now what would a baseball book of firsts be if it didn’t recognize the first ever shortstop, Doc Adams, the pioneer credited with creating the position. On February 29, 1896, the Sporting News published an article on Dr. D. L. Adams sub-titled ‘Memoirs of the Father of Base Ball’ in which Doc talks about his contributions to the nascent National Pastime.  In this article, Doc Adams is quoted as saying, I used to play shortstop, and I believe I was … Continue reading →

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on October 4, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.December 11, 2021

Baseball Hall of Famer Henry Chadwick and Doc Adams remained friends until Doc’s death. They often corresponded and reminisced about the ‘old days’ as is evidenced by this letter from Chadwick. 257 Green AveBrooklynOct 4 My Dear Doctor, Your most welcome letter of the 3rd Sept was just handed me and I answer it at once.
