Buy Me Some Peanuts and Cracker Jacks…

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on March 29, 2026 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.January 3, 2026

To celebrate Opening Day in 2024, Kerry J. Byrnes, wrote an article, “Crackerjack, immortalized in baseball anthem is a grand-slam recipe at home, too.” It highlights the history of that “salty, sweet, and crunchy” snack that has been associated with baseball for over a hundred years. John Thorn, the Official Historian of Major League Baseball provided historical context for the article. Cracker Jack was already a popular ballpark snack when Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote their iconic anthem in 1908, “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.” Byrnes also includes a recipe so you can make your own … Continue reading →

Remembering Marjorie Adams And Her Great-Grandfather’s Appearance On A HOF Ballot

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on December 7, 2025 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.January 4, 2026

Today would have been Marjorie Adams’ 76th birthday. Marjorie’s tireless efforts to spread the story of her great-grandfather, Doc Adams, enlightened and inspired many baseball fans. Marjorie conducted a campaign to educate people on Doc’s role as a pioneer of our National Pastime and his importance to baseball’s survival and growth during its nascent period. Her goal was to see him recognized with long overdue enshrinement in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. She made many ‘baseball’ friends, particularly in the vintage base ball community. She is greatly missed. When talking about Doc, Marjorie often said that “she has all … Continue reading →

Marjorie Adams talked with Dan Wallach on his “My Baseball History” podcast about her great-grandfather, Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams, M.D. To steal a line from SABR, Marjorie draws on her family archives and ephemera in addition to more traditional sources to provide an in-depth look into the man John Thorn called “the true father of baseball – and you’ve never even heard of him!” “Liner notes” for this podcast episode can be found at “My Baseball History: 202 – Marjorie Adams“.

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on October 10, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 9, 2024

In 2015, Marjorie Adams was interviewed on WBUR’s “Only a Game” about her great-grandfather, baseball pioneer, Doc Adams. Doc Adams: 19th Century Ballplayer, 21st Century Hall of Famer? (article) In baseball, there are rules. The distance between bases is 90 feet. Nine players on the field. Nine-inning games. And everyone knows: three strikes and you’re out. But there was a time when those rules hadn’t been established, and into that time came a guy named Doc Adams. This week, the baseball Hall of Fame announced that Adams will have his first chance for induction under the Pre-Integration Era Committee ballot. His … Continue reading →
