Fourteen clubs sent three delegates each to the first session. Two additional clubs sent delegates to the second session. Some clubs’ delegations from the first session did not return, so the full 16 clubs never actually met together. The first order of business was for the convention to organize itself … Continue reading →

Baseball’s Radical For All Seasons

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on November 10, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.November 6, 2024

In David Stevens’ book, “Baseball’s Radical For All Seasons” he mentions John Montgomery Ward’s letter crediting Doc Adams’s important role in baseball’s development. When in about the year 1842, or earlier, Dr. D.L. Adams, Alexander J. Cartwright, Colonel James Lee, Duncan F. Curry, E.R. Dupignac, William F. Ladd, and other prominent business and professional men of New York City, seeking some medium for outdoor exercise, turned to the boy’s game of Base Ball, there was not a code of rules nor any written records of the game, and their only guide to the method of playing was their own recollection … Continue reading →

“The Treasures of Major League Baseball” [edited by Major League Baseball] tells the rich and fascinating history of baseball through hundreds of photographs and an exhaustively researched and evocative text. The origin and evolution of the sport are explored, as are the great players, famous games and idiosyncrasies such as team owners, broadcasters and collectors of baseball souvenirs. Another Knickerbockers player, Daniel Adams, also plays prominently into the game’s early history. At a meeting with other amateur clubs in 1857, Adams chaired a rules committee that made important changes to the sport, like putting a nine-inning cap on games and … Continue reading →

A History Of American Sports In 100 Objects

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on October 27, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 27, 2024

In her book “A History of American Sports in 100 Objects”, Cait Murphy proposes that these 100 objects tell much more than just stories about great games – they tell the story of the nation. She shows how the games Americans play are woven into the fabric of America itself. One of the objects that she includes is “Soil From The Elysian Fields”. She states that “In Greek mythology, the souls of the historic dead enjoyed paradise in the Elysian Fields.” She found it fitting that was the home of the Knickerbockers and that the “first organized baseball game” took … Continue reading →

Doc Adams And The Rules

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 12, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 3, 2024

Three amendments to the rules were proposed and received by Dr. Jones (Excelsior), the chairman of the Rules Committee; however, because the committee did not present these to the convention committee prior to the 1862 meeting, no changes to the playing rules could officially be made. Two events had resulted in the Rules Committee being unable to forward its recommended changes before the convention. In March of 1862, Dr. Adams (Knickerbocker) resigned from the Knickerbocker Club as well as the Rules Committee, married, and moved to Connecticut. Judge William Van Cott (Gotham) traveled to Centerville, Virginia, in the middle of November to … Continue reading →

The early years centered around an organization known as the National Association of Base Ball Players. So, they made it official, this gentlemen’s club, composed of seventeen merchants, twelve clerks, five brokers, four professional men, a bank teller, a “Segar Dealer”, a hatter, a cooperage owner, and several “gentlemen”. they elected Daniel L. “Doc” Adams, a physician, their president.
