In His Own Words Chapter 1: Enthusiasm (The Chicago Chronicle)

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on October 16, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 16, 2024

A seminal interview of Daniel Lucius Adams, M.D. appeared in The Sporting News on February 29, 1896. This is the only known first-hand account of Doc’s memories of the game. Similar interviews (or excerpts) began to appear in newspapers across the Midwest apparently originating in The Chicago Chronicle on June 23, 1895. This is the first chapter in a nine-part series, excerpts from those two mentioned articles and are Doc Adams’ recollections of the game and its early history, in his own words. This first chapter is titled: “Enthusiasm”. He never talked about baseball. We have not one thing in … Continue reading →

Doc Adams: 19th Century Ballplayer, 21st Century Hall Of Famer?

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on October 10, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 9, 2024

In 2015, Marjorie Adams was interviewed on WBUR’s “Only a Game” about her great-grandfather, baseball pioneer, Doc Adams. Doc Adams: 19th Century Ballplayer, 21st Century Hall of Famer? (article) In baseball, there are rules. The distance between bases is 90 feet. Nine players on the field. Nine-inning games. And everyone knows: three strikes and you’re out. But there was a time when those rules hadn’t been established, and into that time came a guy named Doc Adams. This week, the baseball Hall of Fame announced that Adams will have his first chance for induction under the Pre-Integration Era Committee ballot. His … Continue reading →

Do You Know Doc Adams?

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 2, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

Help us SHARE Doc Adams’ story with friends, on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, … Special thanks to Jake Schmidt for all his efforts on the “Do You Know Doc Adams?” videos. Did you know that the game of baseball as we know it today was significantly shaped by a man named Doc Adams in the mid-1800s? He wasn’t just a player; but was a pioneer who helped craft the foundation of the modern game. John Thorn, the official historian of Major League Baseball, referred to Doc Adams as “Baseball’s most important figure not in the Hall of Fame… More than … Continue reading →

The Nestor Of Ball Players

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 1, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 26, 2024

When Doc Adams retired from the Knickerbockers, he was immediately named an honorary member and presented with a set of resolutions thanking him for his long and meritorious service to the club.” This proclamation/resolution (The Nestor* of Ball Players) was presented to Doc as “a most gorgeously engrossed” scroll which was produced by Ben F. Brady. And so, Doc’s active participation in the game he loved and over which he had a significant and pioneering influence came to a close. *A King of ancient Greece who advised the Greeks at Troy; a patriarch in his field, wise counselor, or leader. In … Continue reading →

Doc Adams’ Youngest Son’s Recollections Of His Father

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on February 16, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.July 19, 2024

Roger Cook Adams wrote the “Nestor of Ball Players” about his father in August 1939. Besides some facts about Doc’s contributions, it’s interesting how Roger Cook Adams highlighted how Doc’s passion for the game was invaluable to the early game, The first five years of the existence of the Club were evidently the hardest. Enthusiasm waned and attendance lagged. There was no inter-club rivalry, and often Dr. Adams would go to Elysian Fields and find only two or three others present, compelling them to play “old cat, one or two as the case might be.” The continued existence of the … Continue reading →
