Knickerbocker BBC Vs. The Excelsiors

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 10, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.December 10, 2021

An account of a previous Knickerbocker-Excelsior game played on 8 July 1858 reported, regarding post-game activities, that “Our reporter—Mr. Chadwick—was called upon to respond to the toast of ‘The Press,’ but being somewhat diffident of his oratorical powers, he quietly retreated a moment before the call, having previously deputied the gentleman from the Tribune to respond, which duty he ably performed.” Significantly, this same account also included the observation that “The fielding of the Knickerbockers was marked by some excellent catches ‘on the fly.’ Their opponents seemed to prefer the surer, but less skillful method, of taking the ball on … Continue reading →

In Memory Of Marjorie Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 7, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.December 10, 2021

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Marjorie Adams, great-granddaughter of Dr. Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams passed away on July 7, 2021. Marjorie’s tireless efforts to spread the story of her great-grandfather, Doc Adams, enlightened and inspired many baseball fans. Marjorie conducted a campaign to educate people on Doc’s role as a pioneer of our National Pastime and his importance to baseball’s survival and growth during its nascent period. Her goal was to see him recognized with long overdue enshrinement in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. She has made many ‘baseball’ friends, particularly in the … Continue reading →

The New York Clipper according to its masthead, was “The Oldest American Sporting and Theatrical Journal”. It was the standard bearer of sports weeklies during the 19th century. When died in 1899, Doc Adams was remembered in this publication, one of the earliest to regularly cover sports in the United States and one that played an important role in popularizing baseball in the country, as follows:

Jay Jaffe on Doc Adams’ Hall Chances

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 2, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 16, 2023

Jay Jaffe of FanGraphs again shows support for Doc Adams’ inclusion in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Hopefully, the committee does better homework than it did last time when Doc came up 2 votes short for election. Since the last time Doc was eligible, the discovery of his handwritten “Laws of Base Ball” was announced. This document sold at auction for $3,263,246, setting a new record for the highest priced baseball document. It was also featured in the Baseball Americana exhibit at the library of Congress. “Adams’s hand in the sport’s early rule-making is not a revelation; instead, it … Continue reading →

#5 On The Top Most Expensive Sports Collectibles On The Market

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on June 29, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.December 11, 2021

In a recent Sport Web article, “The Top 8 Most Expensive Sports Collectibles on the Market” by Theodore Hubbard, Doc Adams’ Laws of Base Ball came in at #5. In 2016, the Laws fetched $3.26 million at auction. Thier greater value is that they provide objective evidence of Doc Adams’ role as a pioneer of the early game and should cement his case for the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
