Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 26, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

Recently, I had the honor to speak with Jeff Cohen and Len Aberman on their Baseball and BBQ podcast. I had a wonderful time talking with them and greatly appreciate their approaching me to talk about Doc Adams. It was a great opportunity to continue to raise awareness of our favorite baseball pioneer on their popular podcast. The episode was released Saturday, August 24. Marjorie Adams appeared previously on the Marjorie Adams, Baseball Royalty, … Episode on 3/8/2021 and was memorialized in the Marjorie Adams In Memoriam Episode on 7/24/2021. The Book Of Baseball Literacy

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 25, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 3, 2024

In “The Book of Baseball Literacy:” David H. Martinez accurately refers to Doc Adams as an early “Father of Baseball”. He also discusses how modern research (by John Thorn, et al) has demonstrated that Alexander Cartwright’s role has been exaggerated with erroneous attribution of contributions. Contributions that should be more correctly credited to Doc Adams. A cross-referenced collection of facts, folklore and untold tales about key figures, events and institutions. Easy-to-find answers to the most common (and obscure but fascinating) baseball questions.” USA Today

Baseball For Dummies

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 24, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 3, 2024

We realize that our followers are knowledgeable baseball fans who are fans not only of the game but its history. By referencing a book, “Baseball For Dummies” by late Hall of Famer Joe Morgan with Richard Lally, we don’t mean offend any of our “fans”. We want to applaud this effort to spread awareness about Doc Adams to casual and non-fans. Morgan and Lally highlight Doc Adams and “those magic 90 feet”. Baseball For Dummies is for baseball fans at all levels, from players and coaches to spectators who love the game. Baseball Hall of Fame player Joe Morgan explains … Continue reading →

Marjorie Adams On “My Baseball History” Podcast

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 23, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 3, 2024

Marjorie Adams talked with Dan Wallach on his “My Baseball History” podcast about her great-grandfather, Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams, M.D. To steal a line from SABR, Marjorie draws on her family archives and ephemera in addition to more traditional sources to provide an in-depth look into the man John Thorn called “the true father of baseball – and you’ve never even heard of him!” “Liner notes” for this podcast episode can be found at “My Baseball History: 202 – Marjorie Adams“.

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 22, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.February 23, 2025

Buffalo, New York August 1939 Written by: Roger Cook Adams “During the present year when the centennial of the first out-break of base ball is being celebrated at Cooperstown, it may be of interest to record the important part played in the development of the game by an early member of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York.” … “In the interest of uniformity it seemed wise to call a convention of representatives of all the club to establish a permanent code of rules by which all should be governed, and a call for such a convention was issued … Continue reading →

From Cartwright To Shoeless Joe

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 20, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 3, 2024

In his book “From Cartwright To Shoeless Joe”, Ron McCulloch discuses Doc Adams role as a baseball pioneer and executive by highlighting his leadership roles with the Knickerbockers and the National Association of Base Ball Players. In early 1858 Knickerbocker president “Doc” Adams and the presidents of the Gotham, Eagle and Empire clubs put out a call for another meeting of baseball clubs. On March 10 of that year representatives of 26 clubs gathered and “The National Association of Base Ball Players” was formed to oversee the game and administrate the rules and regulations. From Cartwright To Shoeless Joe, Ron … Continue reading →

Doc Adams ’24

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 17, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

The Vintage Base Ball community is not being shy about their thoughts about what they hope will be announced at this year’s MLB Winter Meetings regarding baseball pioneer, Doc Adams. They’re wearing their heart on their sleeve (sort of) in an effort to demonstrate their support for the long-overlooked base ball legend that MLB Official Historian, John Thorn, referred to as “baseball’s most important figure not in the Hall of Fame.” Tom “Big Bat” Fesolowich, Mutual Base Ball Club president and founder, and founder of the National Association of Historic Base Ball Clubs came up with a novel and timely … Continue reading →
