John Zinn Reflects On Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 14, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 1, 2024

When I give baseball history presentations, I usually begin by saying that “As we all know, Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, New York.”  The statement is usually greeted with laughs and smiles reflecting the increasing awareness that Doubleday had nothing to do with baseball’s beginnings. But this relatively frequent reaction should not lead us to become complacent. Any such thoughts got a rude awakening when I recently learned of a sign in Mendham, New Jersey proclaiming that Doubleday, who once lived there, was baseball’s “founder.”  It’s wrong, wrong, wrong!  Not only is there no evidence, Doubleday invented baseball, to … Continue reading →

Joe Williams Reflects On His Baseball Journey And Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 12, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 1, 2024

My Baseball Journey and Support of Doc Adams’ Election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by Joe Williams This post is long overdue. My friend, Roger Ratzenberger, has politely asked me on many occasions to write something for Doc Adams Base Ball in support of Doc Adams for the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I tried writing something over the summer, but I could not figure out what I could add to what has already been written for the site. Doc Adams Base Ball already covers everything about Doc’s life and baseball accomplishments in a wonderful way. I told … Continue reading →

Surprise Support Received For Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 6, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 8, 2024

At the Fleischmanns 2021 Labor Day Street Fair, Collin ‘Stumpy’ Miller collected signatures for our Doc Adams’ petition. This was the second of two events in 2021 at Fleischmanns that garnered support for Doc Adams (Fleischmanns Mountain Athletic Club & Mudville Base Ball Club Raise Awareness).  Of special interest was the last person to sign the petition at the end of the day, Chris Moore. Moore’s great grandfathers’ uncle was Charle DeBost, who was a teammate of Doc’s on the 1859 Knickerbocker Base Ball Club and pictured to the immediate left of Doc (Doc’s right) in the famous photo on display … Continue reading →

Historians, Authors, And Writers Weigh In On Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 4, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 1, 2024

“Anyone looking for the origins and development of the “New York Game,” what we know as baseball, invariably runs into “Doc” Adams at nearly every turn. The Doubleday and Cartwright founding myths have long been exploded. Yet, the man who was, to use a popular phrase, “in the room where it happened” and actually was the catalyst remains un-honored by the HOF. Now is the time to correct that error.” Robert D. Sampson, Historian “Doc” Adams was selected by a SABR wide election in 2014, as an Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend, implying that he is deserving, but not yet … Continue reading →

Baseball Historian Graham Womack On Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 3, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 1, 2024

As a historian, I care about accuracy and preserving what really happened in baseball’s history. Enshrining Doc Adams in the Hall of Fame would be a great way to honor this. The creator of this website, Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr. does a nice job of summing up Adams’ accomplishments. I’ll offer them here for anyone who hasn’t read that post yet. Essentially, Adams, the president of New York City’s Knickerbocker Base Ball Club led a committee that codified various rules for the game, including that bases were to be 90 feet apart, games were to last nine innings and teams … Continue reading →

Talking Doc Adams On Baseball And BBQ

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 26, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

Recently, I had the honor to speak with Jeff Cohen and Len Aberman on their Baseball and BBQ podcast. I had a wonderful time talking with them and greatly appreciate their approaching me to talk about Doc Adams. It was a great opportunity to continue to raise awareness of our favorite baseball pioneer on their popular podcast. The episode was released Saturday, August 24. Marjorie Adams appeared previously on the Marjorie Adams, Baseball Royalty, … Episode on 3/8/2021 and was memorialized in the Marjorie Adams In Memoriam Episode on 7/24/2021. Jeff “Pinetar” Kornhaas, founder of the Knickerbocker Experience, was a … Continue reading →

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 18, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

The latest “Pitch for Doc Adams” event was held on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 4 p.m. at historic Doubleday Field in Cooperstown with two clubs from the Delaware County Vintage Base Ball Association – the Mountain Athletic Club of Fleischmanns and the Polecat Base Ball Club featuring the Hamden Nine from Hamden showcasing nearly 40 years of baseball evolution in a progressive format starting in the year 1857 and finishing in 1895, It was a great event, on a beautiful day, in the town where baseball lives. Fans were treated to a fun day of great play while learning about … Continue reading →

Doc Adams ’24

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 17, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

The Vintage Base Ball community is not being shy about their thoughts about what they hope will be announced at this year’s MLB Winter Meetings regarding baseball pioneer, Doc Adams. They’re wearing their heart on their sleeve (sort of) in an effort to demonstrate their support for the long-overlooked base ball legend that MLB Official Historian, John Thorn, referred to as “baseball’s most important figure not in the Hall of Fame.” Tom “Big Bat” Fesolowich, Mutual Base Ball Club president and founder, and founder of the National Association of Historic Base Ball Clubs came up with a novel and timely … Continue reading →

Peter Mancuso Comments On Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 11, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

Peter Mancuso, the Co-Chair of the Nineteenth Century Committee of the Society of American Baseball Research, recently commented on one of our posts. We wanted to take a moment to highlight his comments to all our followers. Each year, since 2009, SABR’s Nineteenth Century Committee has been behind the Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legends Project, under the excellent supervision of Project Co-Chairs, Adam Darowski and Joe Williams and their sub-committee members. First only Nineteenth Century Committee members, and now, all SABR members are eligible to vote for a 19th Century baseball person, not yet selected for induction in the National … Continue reading →
