Doc Adams – SABR’s Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 31, 2022 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.June 24, 2022

On July 31, 2014, Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams (1814 – 1899) was selected as the 19th Century Overlooked Baseball Legend by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). This recognition came in the bi-centennial of his birth. Each year SABR honors a 19th century player, manager, executive or other baseball personality not yet inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Adams joined the New York Base Ball Club in 1840. By 1845, he became a member of the famed Knickerbocker Base Ball Club and was elected as its president two years later. In 1848, he … Continue reading →

Searching For Doc Adams

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 30, 2022 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.January 23, 2023

Just a little fun today, I recently did a search for ‘doc adams baseball’ on three major search engines over the span of a ‘week’, a ‘month’, and ‘all time’ and thought I’d share the interesting results. For the period of the last week, both DuckDuckGo and Bing came up with some good Doc content. Google came up empty. Over the span of the last month, both DuckDuckGo and Bing performed very well and Google got in the mix, rating DocAdamsBaseBall.org as #1. When it came to ‘all time’, all 3 search engines did well. In fact, DocAdamsBaseBall.org ranked #1 … Continue reading →

Bud Fowler, Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Minnie Miñoso, Buck O’Neil, Tony Oliva, and David Ortiz were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on this past Sunday. It had been a long time coming for many of them, We had hoped that this year would have been the end of a long wait for Doc Adams, and his contributions and accomplishments would finally be honored in Cooperstown with a plaque. However, Adams’ journey continues as do expressions of support and efforts to see that his is no longer overlooked. Collin Miller of the Knickerbocker Experience and Fleischmanns’ Mountain Athletic … Continue reading →

Thoughts From The Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremonies

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 25, 2022 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.February 27, 2025

Watching the Class of 2022 National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, quotes from several of the induction speeches caught my attention. “Pioneers, many times, do not get to enjoy the changes they bring about or the doors they open.” … “Remember Bud Foster in a broad context, not just as a pioneering African-American professional baseball player. Remember him as a skilled athlete who endured obstacles that are hard to imagine today, as an early force in integrating the game and as a visionary who attempted to create a league of their own when the roadblocks of his time were … Continue reading →

Today, the Class of 2022 will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Congratulations to all those that will be inducted today: Bud Fowler, Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Minnie Miñoso, and Buck O’Neil, Tony Oliva, and David Ortiz, as well as Tim Kurkjian (BBWAA’s Career Excellence Award} and Jack Graney (Ford C. Are You Experienced?

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 22, 2022 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 16, 2023

The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club has been recreated with the debut of The Knickerbocker Experience at the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania this past weekend. With the club’s special attention to historical accuracy, the debut was both fun and meaningful for ballists and cranks alike. A total of 32 clubs battled in a single elimination tournament. Once a team was eliminated from the tournament, they continued to face other clubs in festival play. The Flat Rock Bear Clan BBC of Michigan emerged victorious, defeating the Rising Sun BBC of Maryland 23-11 for the championship. In … Continue reading →

Baseball Americana At The Library Of Congress

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 16, 2022 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.September 16, 2023

In 2018, The Library of Congress hosted the Baseball Americana exhibition.  The ‘Laws of  Base Ball” authored by Doc Adams was the centerpiece of this major, year-long exhibition. The exhibition explored baseball’s past and present and how the game forged a sense of community for players and fans across the country. “The founding documents of baseball that would shape the modern game as our national pastime were ironed out in January and February 1857 at a convention called by the Knickerbockers Base Ball Club in New York City. Corrections were made by hand as the details were negotiated by New … Continue reading →

This Day in History… July 12

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on July 14, 2022 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.January 23, 2023

Just came across this on the Jamaica Observer website. 1892: Despite Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams, president of the New York Knickerbockers Base Ball Club, authoring documents titled the Laws of Base Ball in 1857 which established the essentials of the modern game, Alexander Cartwright is credited as the American inventor of modern baseball in 1860. Cartwright dies of natural causes at age 72 on this day. “This Day In History – July 12”, Jamaica Observer
