Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams was born in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire on November 1, 1814 to Daniel Adams, MD and Nancy Mulliken Adams. He and his family lived there until 1846 when they moved to Keene, New Hampshire. The Doc Adams Invitational is (will be) an annual celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Daniel Lucius Adams, an early founder of base ball and native son of Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. The Fashion Race Course games were played between All-Star teams (pick nines) comprised of the finest New York-area players versus the finest Brooklyn area players representing the 1st real All-Star Games. It was also the 1st time admission was charged to watch a game. The following is the box score from the 3rd and final game, played on September 10, 1858. The umpire for this important game was none other than Doc Adams of the Knickerbocker Club.
Continue reading →Hal Bock wrote an excellent article very supportive of Doc Adams induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The article appeared in his Bock’s Score column in NY Sports Day titled “Meet the Man Who Created The Shortstop”. As Bock points out, “It would help if Ripken and Jeter have votes.” One note: the article states that Doc’s next chance comes up next year. Although under the old Era Committee format that would be true, sadly, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced a change to the ‘Era’ format last year.
