The Nestor Of Ball Players

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 1, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 26, 2024

When Doc Adams retired from the Knickerbockers, he was immediately named an honorary member and presented with a set of resolutions thanking him for his long and meritorious service to the club.” This proclamation/resolution (The Nestor* of Ball Players) was presented to Doc as “a most gorgeously engrossed” scroll which was produced by Ben F. Brady. And so, Doc’s active participation in the game he loved and over which he had a significant and pioneering influence came to a close. *A King of ancient Greece who advised the Greeks at Troy; a patriarch in his field, wise counselor, or leader. In … Continue reading →

Memories Of The Father Of Base Ball (part 4)

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 29, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.February 23, 2025

Buffalo, New York August 1939 Written by: Roger Cook Adams “During the present year when the centennial of the first out-break of base ball is being celebrated at Cooperstown, it may be of interest to record the important part played in the development of the game by an early member of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York.” … “He was often asked in later years how the game originated, but was unable to fix any definite starting point. He believed it developed from the English game of rounders, which was played with bat, ball and bases, although the … Continue reading →

Talk About Big Shoes To Fill

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 28, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

It’s always a challenge for children to live up to their celebrity relatives. This article in the “Argus and Patriot” (Montpelier, VT) dated August 28, 1895 illustrates that this is not a new phenomenon. The article is a recount of a game between National Life Insurance Company and the Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company. The game was played on Seminary Hill in Montpelier, Vermont on a rather inclement day. The final score was 14-7 in favor of the “fire boys”. The game account is written in the ‘flowery style” of the day and interesting for that alone. However, about halfway into … Continue reading →

Fleischmanns Mountain Athletic Club & Mudville Base Ball Club Raise Awareness

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 27, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

In 2021, the Fleischmanns Mountain Athletic Club (M.A.C.) and the Mudville Base Ball Club, from the Boston area, played a lively and entertaining doubleheader of 1860’s style baseball. The recent heat wave broke just in time and made the day even more enjoyable for ballists and cranks alike. Collin Miller raised awareness of the contributions of Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams, MD to our National Pastime and why he should be in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Making the event even more special, Nancy Adams Downey, a great-granddaughter of Doc Adams, was on hand to watch the festivities and share … Continue reading →

Doc Adams ’24

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 17, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.October 3, 2024

The Vintage Base Ball community is not being shy about their thoughts about what they hope will be announced at this year’s MLB Winter Meetings regarding baseball pioneer, Doc Adams. They’re wearing their heart on their sleeve (sort of) in an effort to demonstrate their support for the long-overlooked base ball legend that MLB Official Historian, John Thorn, referred to as “baseball’s most important figure not in the Hall of Fame.” Tom “Big Bat” Fesolowich, Mutual Base Ball Club president and founder, and founder of the National Association of Historic Base Ball Clubs came up with a novel and timely … Continue reading →

Memories Of The Father Of Base Ball (part 2)

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 15, 2024 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.February 23, 2025

Buffalo, New York August 1939 Written by: Roger Cook Adams “During the present year when the centennial of the first out-break of base ball is being celebrated at Cooperstown, it may be of interest to record the important part played in the development of the game by an early member of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York.” … “The first five years of the existence of the Club were evidently the hardest. Enthusiasm waned and attendance lagged. There was no inter-club rivalry, and often Dr. Adams would go to Elysian Fields and find only two or three others … Continue reading →
