Doc at Shortstop

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on November 5, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.June 24, 2022

Doc Adams on the shortstop position from the February 29, 1896 Sporting News interview. “I used to play shortstop, and I believe I was the first to occupy that place, as it had formerly been left uncovered. At different times I have, however, played in every position except that of pitcher. We had a splendid catcher in the person of Charles S. Debost, who would be a credit to the position even to-day, I am sure. He was a good batter also, and a famous player in his day. Thw Spoering Newa (February 29, 1896) John Thorn tweeted the reason … Continue reading →

The First Shortstop

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on October 17, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.January 30, 2024

Due to the unfortunate postponement of the Induction of the Class of 2020, we had an opportunity for a very unique situation with the 2021 Hall of Fame Induction. Derek Jeter is the latest shortstop to be elected as a member of the Class of 2020. Jeter is the 26th shortstop to be bestowed the honor of a plaque in Cooperstown. If the Early Baseball Era Committee elected Doc Adams as a member of the Class of 2021, Jeter would be inducted alongside the man who created the shortstop position. Alas, it was not meant to be as the Early … Continue reading →

Spotlight On Shortstops

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on August 28, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.December 10, 2021

With the induction of Derek Jeter into the National Baseball Hall of Fame rapidly approaching, we recently released this press release. Its subtitle, “Without Doc Adams, Would There Be A Derek Jeter?” raises an interesting question. We believe the answer is a resounding “Yes”; however, he may have been playing a different position. The 2nd page of the release is a Doc Adams Timeline that summarizes and highlights Doc’s lifetime accomplishments. We’d like to take this opportunity to express our congratulations to “The Captain”! Hope to see him next year in Cooperstown. On request, a PDF can be sent via … Continue reading →

How Did the Shortstop Position Get Its Name?

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on May 21, 2021 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.December 10, 2021

Patrick Pinak asked this question this week in FANBUZZ in his article, “How Did Shortstop Get The Name “Shortstop”?”. Of course, everyone who knows Doc Adams’ story already new the answer. It is re-assuring that more people are becoming aware of Doc and his contributions to the National Pastime. This continues to be important in the year that Dr. Daniel “Lucius” Adams should appear on the Hall of Fame ballot for the second time. If he receives enough vote at the 2021 Winter Meetings, he will be enshrined in the class of 2022.

Hal Bock Writes About Doc in NY Sports Day

Doc Adams Base Ball (Official) Posted on September 4, 2017 by Roger J. Ratzenberger, Jr.July 14, 2022

Hal Bock wrote an excellent article very supportive of Doc Adams induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The article appeared in his Bock’s Score column in NY Sports Day titled “Meet the Man Who Created The Shortstop”. As Bock points out, “It would help if Ripken and Jeter have votes.” One note: the article states that Doc’s next chance comes up next year. Although under the old Era Committee format that would be true, sadly, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced a change to the ‘Era’ format last year. Doc will not be eligible again until 2020, when … Continue reading →
