Henry Chadwick On The Father Of Baseball

On August 16, 1898, Henry Chadwick wrote to Doc Adams responding to Doc’s letter congratulating him on the title of “Father of Base Ball”. Mr. Chadwick wrote: “That title of ‘Father of Base Ball’ is out of place. Base like Topsy ‘never had no fader’ it growed up.” Mr. Chadwick was being modest, however there are others who he could share that title with, including the good doctor. Chadwick Letter

Baseball Hall of Famer Henry Chadwick and Doc Adams remained friends until Doc’s death. In his book, “”The Father of Baseball”: A Biography of Henry Chadwick”, Andrew J. Schiff states: “At this particular stage, only one other person, Dr. Daniel “Doc” Adams of the Knickerbockers, may have had more influence. Doc Adams was elected presiding officer of the first convention of baseball players and was credited with many of the game’s early innovations.”

Chadwick Shares A Letter From The Late Dr. Daniel Adams

This article appeared in the Sporting News on the page 5 of the February 4, 1899 edition. In the article, Henry Chadwick shares the last letter he received from ‘his old base ball friend’. Doc reminisces about base ball, from it’s infancy to the ‘modern day’. On the same day, Chadwick’s reminiscences of his late friend and baseball pioneer, Dr. Daniel ‘Doc’ Lucius Adams was published on the front page of The Sporting Life.

Reminiscences of The Late Dr. Daniel Adams

On January 31, 1899, Henry Chadwick wrote to the editor of the Sporting Life with reminiscences of his late friend and baseball pioneer, Dr. Daniel ‘Doc’ Lucius Adams. The letter was published on the front page of the February 4, 1899 edition. On that same day, Doc Adams was also remembered by Mr Chadwick in The Sporting News.
