Remembering The First Baseball Convention
On March 7, 2023, Fox News recalled 166th anniversary of the first national convention of base ball players. In the article, “On this day in history, March 7, 1857, baseball adopts nine players, nine innings as standard of competition“, The article does, albeit briefly, mention Doc Adams:
One thing they neglected to mention was that, “Thorn calls a trio of recently discovered documents from the meetings the “Magna Carta of Baseball, the Great Charter of Our Game.”” refers to the “Laws of Base Ball” handwritten by Doc Adams.
One flaw in the article is that the convention was NOT held on March 7, 1857. That is the date that the summary was published in Porter’s Spirit of the Times. The convention was actually held in 2 sessions: the first on January 22 and the second on February 25 (a rules committee met on January 28). So the actual date to remember was February 25, 1857.
