Memories and Dreams is the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s bi-monthly magazine. It includes in-depth profiles of Hall of Famers and regular features on the historic artifacts, photographs and documents that comprise the Museum’s unparalleled collection. The magazine also features behind-the-scenes stories of the unforgettable legends and moments from the National Pastime. Featuring some of the most respected baseball writers in the world, participants in the Museum’s Membership program receive Memories and Dreams six times a year.

In the article, “In Position”, in the Opening Day 2021 issue, Scott Pitoniak, described how the games 10 primary positions (yes, including the Designated Hitter) evolved. However, he spent most of the 1st page of the article discussing Doc Adams contributions to the game highlighting his role in the creation of the shortstop (or short fielder) position. He describes Doc Adams’ role in defining and standardizing key rules of the game. Pitoniak summarizes Doc Adams contributions as follows: “As John Thorn notes, the creation and standardization of those rules cemented Adam’s legacy as ‘the most significant figure in the early history of baseball'”.

I was the first to review this issue: “I always look forward to receiving and reading each issue. This one did not disappoint. Enjoyed the articles on Catfish Hunter, Cal Ripken, Jr, Ray Dandridge, Roberto Clemente, Lou Brock, Toni Stone, et al. I particularly loved the cover art and the “In Position” article. The attention given to Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams, M.D. and his contributions to the National Pastime was greatly appreciated. Kudos to Scott Pitoniak. As Doc Adams is eligible for the next Early Baseball Era ballot, hopefully this article portends favorably for his election and induction as a member of the class of 2022. In any event, this issue is another great read and strongly recommended.”
