1862 Knickerbocker Base Ball Club
This is photograph of the New York Knickerbockers Base Ball Club taken in December 1862. This picture chronicles many of the key member of one of baseball’s first organized clubs. Standing (L to R):

- Duncan Curry – First elected Knickerbocker President, 1845 and instrumental in formalizing the first set of base ball rules.
- Walter T. Avery – Played in the first Knickerbocker game on June 19, 1846 at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey. Was elected Vice President in 1861 and 1864.
- Henry T. (Tiebout) Anthony – Early member of the Knickerbockers, was elected Treasurer in 1851 and 1852 and elected Vice President in 1856 and 1857. Along with his brother Edward formed E & H.T. Anthony & Company, which became the largest distributor and supplier of photographic equipment in the US during the 19th century.
- Charles H. Birney – Early member of the Knickerbockers. Played in the first Knickerbocker match against an opponent, the New York Club, on June 19, 1846 and scored the only run in a 23-1 loss. Elected as Treasurer in 1847.
- William H. Tucker – Was an important figure in formalizing the original set of base ball rules. Became the first elected Secretary and Treasurer of the Knickerbockers in 1845 and was re-elected as Treasurer in 1846. Played in one of the first recorded baseball games on October 23, 1845 for the New York Club against a team of Brooklyn baseball players.
- Seated (L to R): Charles Schuyler DeBost – Elected to the Knickerbockers in the late 1840’s and was a Director from 1853 through 1855. Was the Captain of the New York Club and was the catcher in the first of three 1858 “All-Star” games between New York baseball players and Brooklyn baseball players.
- Daniel Lucius “Doc” Adams – Elected President of the Knickerbockers six times between in 1846 and served until 1861. Headed the Committee to Revise the Constitution and By-Laws in 1848. Elected President of the first baseball convention in 1857.
- James Whyte Davis – Played in one of the first recorded baseball games on October 23, 1845 for the New York Club against a team of Brooklyn baseball players. Elected as a member of the Knickerbockers in 1850. Elected as Secretary from 1854-1856 and 1862-1863. Elected treasurer in 1857 and elected President from 1858 through 1860.
- Ebenezer R. Dupignac, Jr. – Early member of the Knickerbockers, elected Vice President in 1855.
- Fraley C. Niebuhr – Original member of the Knickerbockers. Elected as Treasurer in1848 and1849. Elected Vice President in 1850 and President from 1851 through 1854. Became a director from 1857 to 1858.
