‘Laws Of Base Ball’ To Be Exhibited At The Hall Of Fame
BREAKING NEWS: DOC ADAMS’ GROUNDBREAKING 1857 ‘LAWS OF BASE BALL’ TO BE DISPLAYED AT THE HALL O FAME.
On December 6th, 1856, the Knickerbockers formed a three-man committee headed by Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams (with William Grenelle and Louis Wadsworth) to organize a convention of the New York base ball teams to standardize the rules of the game.
Doc Adams, along with Grenelle and Wadsworth then represented the Knickerbockers at baseball’s 1st convention where Adams was elected the presiding officer of the convention and oversaw the development of the set of rules that mark the beginning of modern baseball.
Adams’ role was mostly lost to history short of a few newspaper articles and a Sporting News interview from 1896. That was until his “Laws of Base Ball” were rediscovered.
Merely a month after Adams’ first, and only, appearance on a Hall of Fame ballot (where he missed election by 2 votes), his handwritten, ‘Laws of Base Ball’ were rediscovered. The “Laws” were purchased at auction by Hayden Trubitt for $3,263,246, setting a new record for the highest priced baseball document. They were first displayed at the Oregon Historical Society in 2016 and later at the Library of Congress as part of their Baseball Americana exhibit in 2018.
Thanks to Mr. Trubitt, the “Laws of Base Ball” will now make a pilgrimage to the National Baseball Hall of Fame for a long-term exhibit.
“These rules springboarded the rapid rise and spread of baseball on the national level. Not only that, there is a direct organizational line from the 1857 Convention to today’s MLB organization.”

“The Laws of Base Ball” will be formally unveiled in the Museum on Friday, May 22, as part of the Hall of Fame’s Memorial Day Weekend celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

“The players’ successful attempt to unify gameplay among the growing number of baseball-focused social clubs in the New York City area – and also to establish key new rules – was a quantum leap forward for the game we know and love today.”
“Groundbreaking 1850s ‘Rules of Base Ball’ Documents Heading to Hall of Fame, Hayden Trubitt, Sports Collectors Daily (January 18, 2026)
This compelling 1857 artifact establishes that Daniel Lucius ‘Doc’ Adams was unequivocally a key pioneer of the game and deserves to be enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. It would seem that this evidence, written in Doc’s own hand, should make him a shoo-in. However, he was snubbed on the subsequent 2 ballots he was eligible for.
“We are honored and grateful that Hayden Trubitt will provide our Museum guests the opportunity to learn about these documents, how they helped advance the game, and how they remain relevant to baseball today. Our visitors come to Cooperstown to experience baseball history, and these documents mark a critical turning point in the history of our national pastime. It is very appropriate that this story will now be told at the home of baseball.”
Josh Rawitch, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (National Baseball Hall of Fame)
Although the Hall of Fame’s announcement did not mention Doc Adams, optimistically, this exhibition of the “Laws” at the Hall of Fame will tell his story and bring more attention to him and his Hall of Fame case. It will hopefully convince the Historical Oversight Committee to include Adams on the 2028 ballot. It also should ensure that once he is on the ballot, he is elected by the Classic Baseball Era Committee (to be convened in December of 2027). This would finally acknowledging this 19th Century Overlooked Baseball Legend rightful place in baseball history, a founding father of baseball. Let’s hope that is what it takes to push him across the finish line. Who knows, maybe then his uniform buttons, probably the oldest baseball artifact with provenance, will make an appearance at the Hall of Fame.
Adams’s hand in the sport’s early rule-making is not a revelation; instead, it is the physical record of his central role memorialized in the three surviving pages of his document.

With the recent discovery of his “Laws of Base Ball” we have tangible primary evidence of his genius. More than anyone else, he created our game of nine innings, nine men, and ninety-foot base paths.

“The Rules of Base Ball” exhibit will debut as part of a special Memorial Day Weekend at the Hall of Fame. The weekend will also feature the Hall of Fame Military Classic: A Salute to Service and Sacrifice. The seven-inning legends game will be held Saturday, May 23, at Cooperstown’s historic Doubleday Field and will feature Hall of Famers and recently retired players.
Make your plans to visit baseball’s shrine and take the opportunity to see a seminal piece of baseball history.
