Chicago Chronicle (June 23, 1895)

A seminal interview of Daniel Lucius Adams, MD appeared in The Sporting News on February 29, 1896. However, an earlier (less comprehensive) one appeared prior to The Sporting News article. The earliest version we have traced this to is this one that appeared in the Chicago Chronicle on June 23, 1895. This is the earliest article we have found that refers to Doc Adams as the “Father of Baseball”. Although there was not ‘one’ “Father of Baseball”, Doc was clearly ‘a’ “Father of Baseball” and as per John Thorn, the Official Historian of Major League Baseball, Adams is “first among the Fathers of Baseball”.
